Refugee Horizons is pleased to announce that it has been selected as the local implementing partner for MOVE Week Africa 2026 in Rwanda. From 21 to 27 September 2026, Refugee Horizons will bring a week of inclusive sport and physical activity to Mahama Refugee Camp and the surrounding host community in Kirehe District.
MOVE Week Africa is coordinated by the MOVE Agent, representing the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA), as part of a continent-wide movement promoting physical activity and community participation through sport. Refugee Horizons will translate the campaign into a locally led programme designed with refugees, host-community members, young people, families and local leaders.
Seven Days of Movement, Connection and Opportunity
The programme is expected to bring together approximately 1,300 refugees and host-community members. Activities will create safe and welcoming spaces where children, youth and adults can move, play, build relationships and discover their abilities together.
Across the week, Refugee Horizons will deliver:
- An integration-through-sport community event
- A community sport festival
- A large-scale community active day
- Football, recreational sport and talent-development activities
- Activities built around teamwork, mutual respect and personal development
Our Role as Local Implementing Partner
The MOVE Agent provides the campaign framework and materials. Refugee Horizons will organise and deliver the activities on the ground, including:
- Planning activities with refugees, host-community members, youth, families and local leaders
- Mobilising participants and community volunteers
- Coordinating venues, schedules and event logistics
- Ensuring activities are inclusive, safe and accessible
- Engaging youth leaders, coaches, referees and volunteers
- Supporting safeguarding, first aid and responsible participation
- Documenting participation, outcomes and lessons learned
- Coordinating campaign visibility and reporting with the MOVE Agent and ISCA
Sport as a Pathway to Inclusion
For Refugee Horizons, sport is more than a single event. It is a practical way to promote healthier lifestyles, confidence, leadership and social connection. When refugee and host-community young people play together, they create relationships and shared experiences that strengthen community cohesion.
MOVE Week Africa 2026 also connects with Refugee Horizons' wider work in child and family development, education, talent development, youth leadership and livelihoods. The week will help young people build skills and identify pathways that can continue beyond the event.
Expected Outcomes
Through MOVE Week Africa 2026, Refugee Horizons aims to:
- Bring 1,300 refugees and host-community members together through sport
- Promote physical activity and healthier lifestyles
- Strengthen social inclusion between refugee and host communities
- Create safe, positive spaces for children and young people
- Promote teamwork, leadership, talent development and mutual respect
- Demonstrate the role of sport in refugee integration and cohesion
- Strengthen pathways to youth leadership, skills and livelihoods
- Build a foundation for continued community sport and development beyond MOVE Week
Building Beyond MOVE Week
MOVE Week Africa 2026 is a starting point, not a one-off activity. Refugee Horizons is using the campaign to build long-term partnerships around sport for development, refugee integration, youth leadership, talent development and livelihoods in Mahama and the surrounding host community.
The estimated delivery budget is RWF 1,450,000. Partners may support the full initiative, a specific budget line or contribute goods and services in kind, including equipment, transport, refreshments, medical support and printing.
